Apt. Noir
This body of work investigates the notion that vision of our true selves exists only in reflections captured in mirrors or photographs. It is inspired by Jacques Lacan’s theory of the self in the mirror as the Ideal-I, and Roland Barthes’ suggestion that we manufacture another body for ourselves when we are photographed.
Apt. Noir is a series of images that are a self-critique and psychological exploration of Little Missy, my Ideal-I. Turning the camera inward is an attempt to hold a mirror to myself and capture the woman I want to be, rather than the girl I see; the girl that society manufactures.
